Na WA Europskom prvenstvu 2021. i Quota turniru za Olimpijadu u Turskoj, Antalya nastupa streličarska reprezentacija između ukupno 40 zemalja i 279 streličarki i streličara.

There are archers from 33 countries fighting for just four quota places next week in Antalya. And there are plenty of names among them who would be seen as significant absentees if they didn’t end up qualifying.

The silver medallist from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Jean-Charles Valladont, will look to book an individual quota for France – ahead of the final qualifier in Paris, where team tickets are available, in just a couple of weeks.

For sure one of the most anticipated events, no longer for the return to “normality”, but for the stakes.

Antalya (TUR) is back, after the Grand Prix in April, to host the European Archery Championships. The 2021 edition is embellished by the (last) Continental Quota Tournament for Tokyo2020Plus1 Olympic Games, and, for nations already qualified, another important test and training.

279 archers coming from 40 countries are expected on the shooting line, for a 6-days competition.

A long week that will start on Monday 31 May with official practice, then on Tuesday June 1 Qualification Rounds. Wednesday 2 will see the individual eliminations (1/48 + 1/24) session in the morning and mixed-team eliminations (till semis) in the afternoon. Thursday 3, last part of individual eliminations and all the team eliminations. Friday 4 is the CQT day for 85 recurve men and 51 recurve women, trying to catch last European spots available. Saturday 5 is dedicated to the Compound Finals, while Sunday 6 to Recurve.

Except for Anton Bulaev, all the other three past champions, of the Legnica 2018 edition, will shoot in Antalya: Steve Wijler (rank n.4), Yasemin Anagoz (rank n.15) and Andrea Marcos (rank n.8).

Amanda Mlinaric shoots at the second stage of the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Lausanne.

Amanda Mlinaric’s jitters are becoming increasingly unfounded.

The compound woman from Croatia has already collected two world-ranking event titles this season, and yet she continues to mention how nervous she is.

“I was afraid that I had lost my confidence in the finals arena, which took me a long time to gain,” Mlinaric explained ahead of last week’s second stage of the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Lausanne.

After a year without competitions, she needed to remind herself that she could shoot as well as she had before the pandemic.

Mlinaric’s first victory of the year, at the first European Grand Prix in March, should have put those fears to rest. Competing on home soil in Porec, she battled blustering winds to convert a deficit in the fourth end into a seven-point victory.

Mlinaric then added to her bounty with a second individual gold medal earlier this month at another world ranking event, the Veronica’s Cup, in Kamnik, Slovenia.

Her qualification round of 704 was 27 points up on her nearest competitor, shooting a back half of 355 out of possible 360 points, and an eventual second seven-point victory in the final, this time over Italian archer Elisa Bazzichetto, added significant world-ranking points to her name.

After which she once again discussed how nervous she was.

“At first I was shaking a bit and I was staying at full draw a bit longer than usual, which is not so typical for me,” Mlinaric said after Slovenia. “But I’m happy – it turned out well in the end.”

An understatement, to say the least. Mlinaric is as formidable as ever, despite an early exit in Lausanne, and the 19-year-old will be a favourite to podium at the upcoming Antalya 2021 European Championships.

If anything, it’s her opponents who should be nervous.

“After I won Porec, I reminded myself that I can shoot just as strong as I used to before the pandemic, and I confirmed it at the Veronica’s Cup,” Mlinaric said. “It sure is a mental boost ahead of larger competitions.”

Competition at the European Archery Championships in Antalya starts with qualification on Tuesday.
